Barry Childs-Helton has been applying the poetic impulse obliquely for decades. He studied with Samuel Yellen at Indiana University Bloomington, completed a master's degree in creative writing, and served on the poetry editorial board of Indiana Writes (later Indiana Review). In the 1980s, he performed with Indiana poets Thomas Hastings and Eric Rensberger in the poetry-and-music ensemble Third Wind, contributing poems, original songs, and accompaniment on guitar and electric bass. As one of the RKO Radio Poets, he also composed poems spontaneously -- commissioned by passersby -- at arts-fair booths in Bloomington and Indianapolis. Currently his poetry is focused more on live reading, often with the Lawrence Poets Laureate gatherings (and a 2015 reunion concert with Third Wind), than on publication. His songs have appeared on two CDs by the Indianapolis eclectic-Celtic band Wild Mercy (with whom he performs on guitar, bass, and vocals), on several recordings known primarily to science fiction fans, and on a 2015 solo CD, "The Summers Behind You". He describes his songwriting style as "English-major folk-rock with jazzy notions and aerospace motifs".
