In this generative workshop, we'll explore the two-way ekphrastic chat between hip hop and contemporary poetry by focusing on the music of Kanye West and the work it has inspired. We'll react to the tension at the heart of Kanye's best tracks — how his provocative lyrics are often at odds with the source material he samples as a backbeat — and manipulate our own rhythms to craft bold poems that are simultaneously of two minds. We'll also consider how our own lives radioactively interact with the pop culture we consume, using Sarah Blake's poetry as a model for writing about space, time, and our place in the Kanye-verse.
