Passion is at the heart of all good writing, combined with the yearning to make sense of what we see, what we hope, what we know. Whether we write poetry, fiction, nonfiction, creative nonfiction, or plays, whether our work is political, personal, or somewhere in-between, we wrestle words toward a moment of alchemy when they somehow magically transform themselves into what we mean. Then we send those words out into the world, hoping they will connect with whomever or whatever needs them most.
How do we achieve those moments of alchemy in our work? How can writers connect with each other in a way that will help them keep their passions alive and strong—and in good perspective? This year’s Gathering of Writers, “Only Connect: Poetry, Prose, Passion” will address these and other questions. You’ll leave full of ideas, inspired to make a difference—and connected with other writers who feel the same way.
Join us at the Indiana Landmarks Center when Indiana's best established and emerging writers will meet for a full day of classes on the writing craft, featuring keynote Scott Russell Sanders. Sessions in poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and playwriting will be presented by nine accomplished Indiana writers, including Andrew Black, Karen Kovacik, Sarah Layden, Kevin McKelvey, William O’Rourke, Sal Pane, Dan Wakefield, Elizabeth Weber, and Ben Winters.
We’ll also celebrate the launch of Best of Flying Island, 2014, a print anthology of fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction selected by FI editors David Hassler, JL Kato, and Julianna Thibodeaux.
This year’s Keynote speaker, Scott Russell Sanders, has written passionately about the world we live in all of his life. He is the author of twenty books of fiction and nonfiction, including Hunting for Hope, Earth Works, and Divine Animal. Among his honors are the Lannan Literary Award, the John Burroughs Essay Award, the Mark Twain Award, the Cecil Woods Award for Nonfiction, and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. In 2012 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of English at Indiana University.
