During La Plaza's Leadership Institute for Latino Youth (LILY) summer program, the Building a Rainbow memoir writing is used to bolster social inquiry, creative questioning, and self-confidence. Students are asked to explore meaning within their communities, how their actions impact those around them, and to articulate thoughts and desires. Above all, we play with words and explore the power of expressing ideas and documenting events.
Each LILY writing group is asked to develop a group identity, a name to share with the world. After careful deliberation and a round of vigorous voting, this year's group selected Monkeys with Typewriters as their collective moniker.
Many special thank-yous go out to the interns who sit, write, and share alongside the students: Amy Demien, Corrie Herron, Brett Hiatt, James Figy, Zhenzhen Liu, and Caroline Wilson (you've taught more with your actions and questions than you'll likely ever know). Thank you to the staff at La Plaza and the Indiana Writers Center for working together in realizing a vision of empowered and brilliant young minds.
