Wheth we are writing to connect, understand, entertain, or discover, memory and imagination provide the context for what’s created on the page. On Saturday, March 28th, we will gather at the Indiana State Library for our favorite day of the year, The Gathering of Writers, when Indiana's best established and emerging writers will meet for a full day of classes on the writing craft.

The dynamic Michael Poore will kick us off with his keynote, Playing the Dying Man, based on the idea that we, as writers, and the characters we create, do not exist as 'themselves.' To quote Peter Schieldahl, from his New Yorker article 'The Art of Dying': "Do you imagine that we speak "as ourselves"? No such selves exist."

Poore will lead a intensive fiction writing workshop, with limited seating. Breakout sessions in creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and playwriting will be presented by Maria Hamilton Abegunde, Liz Duffy Adams, Samuel Autman, Eric Freeze, Janine Harrison, Marc Hudson, Noley Reid, Barbara Shoup, and Ania Spyra will have us writing all day. Click here to read the biographies of each presenter. You can find class descriptions for each presenter here.

You’ll leave full of inspiration, armed with writing drafts ripe for experimentation—along with a hundred other writers who feel the same way.

Michael Poore is the author of two novels for adults: Up Jumps the Devil (Ecco, 2012) and Reincarnation Blues (Del Rey, 2017), one novel for younger readers: Two Girls, a Clock, and a Crooked House (Random House Kids, 2019), as well numerous short stories. His story “The Street of the House of the Sun” appeared in The Year’s Best Nonrequired Reading 2012. Poore lives in Highland, Indiana with his wife, poet and activist Janine Harrison, and their daughter Jianna. As a taxi driver in the mid-1990s, he once inadvertently helped a man escape from jail.

Fiction Intensive with Michael Poore*:

Big Drama / Little Drama: Making the Awesome Relatable

(or: Stories That Read Like a House on Fire)

*Pre-registration is required for this workshop

This class will challenge participants to bring a more personal lens to characters facing epic conflicts. Whether we're talking about short work or full-length projects, characters in trouble on a large scale run the risk of being overwhelmed and defined by their challenges. We'll talk about and practice ways to use imagination and personal experience to make the awesome more relatable, and find the key to the universe in a lost ballcap or an argument about a foot massage. We will examine literature in which this technique appears to good effect, and delve into the meaning of the relationship between the universal and the specific.

*The fiction intensive, with Michael Poore, will be held on the afternoon of the Gathering at the same time as the afternoon breakout sessions. You must register in advance to attend, and all master class registrations include registration for the Gathering of Writers.
