Are you anxious about starting a particular writing project? Or do you start writing projects all the time -- so many that you don’t know which one to focus on, and instead start another? Whether you’re stuck trying to get started or stuck on starting over and over again, this class is for you.
From years of working one-on-one with writers, I can attest to the fact that most of us struggle, in one way or another, with beginnings. Some writers build The Beginning up into a daunting obstacle that must nevertheless be overcome first. Others love beginnings and have trouble moving past them. In this class, we’ll talk about -- and try out -- some concrete strategies for letting go of the unhelpful writing habits that keep us each stuck at the start. And we’ll work on cultivating practices that can help us achieve our goals.
Because this class focuses on the writing process, writers working in any genre -- fiction, poetry, memoir, nonfiction, scholarship -- are welcome. Please arrive ready to share your experience with beginning writing projects, and bring your idea for the project you really want to start, or a draft of the beginning that you’re struggling with, or a few of the projects you’ve started and are torn among.
