Shaking Loose the Character
“My method of character building is from the inside out…” So says Alice Hoffman, but how does she manage? How do we create fully-formed characters, not just cardboard characters whom we push around on a chess board of plot? This class will explore different ways to build characters who are real and that the reader can connect with.
Dialogue Is More Than Talk
Few things smother a reader’s interest in a story quicker than stilted dialogue. This class will explore speech patterns that fit a character–so that not every character sounds the same and each stays true to their personalities and background.
Description: Scene, Place and Character
Techniques that photographers use–framing, light and shadow, manipulation of color, and depth of field–can be effective tools for the writer too. We’ll examine each technique and apply it to writing setting and description. Come ready to write and bring an object that intrigues you (it can be anything and you don’t have to know its story).
Emotional Content & Pacing & Voice
Have you ever read a book and what should have been an emotional experience for you wasn’t? Perhaps the event or reaction was glossed over, perhaps the author couldn’t voice the experience well enough. How can we, as writers, find the voice, pacing and honesty to expose our characters? We’ll explore techniques to give depth and “wallop” to our writing.
