Using visual prompts from visiting German-American poet and landscape painter Gabriele Glang, you will be introduced to the most elegant of poetic forms: the haiku. Writing haiku is a great way to practice paring down to essentials, eliminating all redundancies, and focusing on the microcosmos – which holds the key to the macrocosmos. The three-line, 17-syllable Japanese form offers an ideal vehicle for simple, yet profound observations of daily life. Ekphrastic poetry is a verbal/literary response to a work of art. Glang’s artwork will provide suitable inspiration: her perpetual wanderlust finds expression in calm, evocative landscapes that invite the viewer to look within.

Gabriele Glang teaches creative writing in English at the University of Applied Sciences in Esslingen, Germany. A screenwriter and poet, she writes and publishes in German as well as English. An experienced workshop instructor, she has taught poetry and plein air painting in the US, Germany, Italy, France, and Denmark. She is the author of “Baltic Blues,” which features her recent artwork and ekphrastic poetry; Blue Silence Abounds. Nocturnes in a Minor Key, a collection of poetry; and Göttertage, fictional monologues in the voice of the German Expressionist painter Paula Modersohn-Becker. She is also one of six poets featured in the kasen-renku anthology Seasons of Sharing, published by Leapfrog Press. She lives in southern Germany, the home of her ancestors, on the Swabian Alb.
