First Friday Artist Pop-Up: Rebecca Belu-Henss

Rebecca has been an Art Educator since 1996. For the past 15 years, Rebecca taught art at Westfield Washington Schools in Westfield, Indiana, and prior to that she was an art teacher in Albuquerque, New Mexico public schools. In addition to her work in the classroom, Rebecca was the Related Arts Team Leader, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion School Trainer and Before- and After-School Programs Founder at Shamrock Springs Elementary School in Westfield. She earned a B.A. from Indiana University, Bloomington with a major in Sculpture and minor in Art History, and a Master of Art Education from IUPUI Herron School of Art and Design.

Sarah Layden is the author of Imagine Your Life Like This (University of Wisconsin Press, 2023), The Story I Tell Myself About Myself, winner of the 2017 Sonder Press Chapbook Competition, and Trip Through Your Wires (Engine Books, 2015), a novel. She is co-author with Bryan Furuness of The Invisible Art of Literary Editing (Bloomsbury Academic, 2023.) Her short fiction can be found in Boston ReviewStone Canoe, Blackbird, McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, the anthologies Best Microfiction 2020, Welcome to the Neighborhood, and Sudden Flash Youth, and elsewhere. Her recent nonfiction work has appeared in The Washington Post, Newsweek, Poets & Writers, SalonRiver TeethThe Millions, The Humanist, and Indianapolis Monthly.She earned a B.S. in journalism from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, and an MFA in fiction writing from Purdue University. She is an Assistant Professor of English at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

Butler University Visiting Writers Series: Lauren Redniss

Lauren Redniss seamlessly combines art, design, and in-depth historical research along with her beautiful prose to create unique works of visual non-fiction. As noted by the National Book Foundation,“Redniss’ achievement is a celebration of the essential power of books to inform, charm, and transport. In marrying the graphic and visual arts with biography and cultural history, she has expanded the realm of non-fiction.”
Her books have won numerous awards, while she has been a Guggenheim fellow, a fellow at the New York Public Library’s Cullman Center for Scholars & Writers and the New America Foundation. She was Artist-in-Residence at the American Museum of Natural History in 2013 and, in 2020, created an 8000 square foot installation at Lincoln Center for New York City Ballet. She teaches at the Parsons School of Design in New York City.

Midwest Mystery Conference

Our in-person conference is back! This one-day event is ideal for crime fiction readers, writers, and publishing pros. With a single track of panels and keynote conversations, the Midwest Mystery Conference is a great opportunity to connect with your favorite authors, and meet a few new ones!
