Kurt Vonnegut said, “All people, living or dead, are purely coincidental.” This is not only true, but I feel he was inviting us to take advantage of the finest, raw source material available: people who really exist, and people who have already been invented. No dreamed-up character will ever match the nuance, pathos, and humor of your Aunt Lucy, or your neighbor Charlie. Can you bring your friends and family through the looking glass and onto the page without ending up in court?
Doubling down on this audacity, what about characters from great literature and mythology, our common pool of inner friends and neighbors? Can you bring Puck to life in an Ohio rivertown? Put Moll Flanders through medical school or run Calypso for the school board? What kind of dog would Grendel have?
Michael Poore is the author of two novels: Up Jumps the Devil (Ecco, 2012) and Reincarnation Blues (Del Rey, 2017), and numerous short stories. His story “The Street of the House of the Sun” appeared in The Year’s Best Nonrequired Reading 2012. Poore lives in Highland, Indiana with his wife, poet and activist Janine Harrison, and their daughter Jianna. As a taxi driver in the mid-1990s, he once inadvertently helped a man escape from jail.
