How do you ask about sensitive or painful topics, particularly if you’re interviewing strangers? What questions help with children or teenagers? How do you coax elderly relatives and neighbors to share detailed, captivating memories for family and church histories or memoirs?

Some techniques almost compel people to talk. Others don’t. This class is designed for all kinds of writers who want to extract information from other people. Topics will include favorite (and least favorite) questions; how to choreograph an interview; phone and e-mail questioning; ideal settings for interviews, and techniques for interviewing survivors of tragedies.

The instructor is veteran interviewer Nelson Price, an author/historian, radio host and former feature writer/columnist for The Indianapolis Star. He’s known for interviewing famous Hoosiers such as David Letterman, Jane Pauley and Kurt Vonnegut. But he also has suggestions for making people talk based on interviews with bankers, veterinarians, grandparents, ministers, musicians and folks of all ages and walks of life.
