“An essay is the story of a person thinking,” and most writers take their readers through a thought process that is chronological and linear, with clear transitions. But sometimes a linear treatment isn’t the most effective way to express the connections between the subjects a writer wants to explore. Mosaic essays are made up of segments separated by white space. There are no clear transitions between them, and they may not appear in chronological order. This type of essay mirrors the often chaotic thought process a writer goes through to connect several seemingly unconnected topics and find meaning in the spaces between them. In this class with master essayist Susan Neville, students will learn about this form and participate in writing exercises to create a draft of their own mosaic essay.
