Perhaps the very beginning of travel writing began with pilgrimages chronicling their journeys to seek wisdom, transformation, and inspiration to numinous landscapes, shrines of nature, places deemed divine or significant because of historical events, or human-made structures sanctified by ritual and worship.  How does one go about thoughtfully and objectively writing about the desire, the physical journey, and most difficult of all—the physical and emotional states felt upon being there? In the workshop, we discuss what makes a pilgrimage essay, noting some elements found in them, and of course sketch out outlines, images, and possible scenes from our own pilgrimage experiences.
