Sometimes structural decisions are instinctive, and we let it unfold as we write; sometimes we make structural decisions consciously, like blueprints, and impose stories upon them. But if you begin the story and the structure you thought it needed isn’t working, it can be helpful to look at your draft to see how the story moves and whether it is strengthening its theme and focus from paragraph to paragraph, page to page.
This class will explore how traditional and alternative structures work in fiction and nonfiction. Participants will learn how to draw the shape of a story, starting with the most basic of structures, Freytag’s Pyramid and how to label the anatomy of a narrative. From there, we’ll discuss and experiment with alternative arcs through group discussion and writing prompts.
This class will be helpful to those who write fiction, creative nonfiction, and essays, or work in hybrid-form.
