The difference between summary and scene is the difference between a passing anecdote the reader listens to and a gripping moment the reader experiences. You might be surprised to discover the items so easily overlooked when it’s you doing the writing. This class will teach you how to see it from a fresh perspective, examine it, and then write it in a way that puts your reader right there with you. In this two-session class, we will learn how to take even mundane moments of your story and turn them into something cinematic and vivid by adding characterization, detailed imagery, dialogue, and action. In the first session, we will cover the craft of writing a scene; in the second session, we will workshop what we’ve written.

Note: All you need to bring to class with you the first day is a passing anecdote (“Today at the post office, an elderly man lost his temper because of the long line”) or a quick summary of an aspect of your day (“This morning, I got up, fed the cat, got ready for work, and then spilled my coffee during my commute”).
