This workshop assumes that poetry is an agent for change—a means of transforming the individual and society. It also assumes that poetry that speaks to public issues is most engaging and transformative when it looks from fresh perspectives and avoids being dogmatic and abstract. It presupposes the importance of curiosity—the desire to be surprised by what the poem will say. A variety of prompts, accompanied by models, will introduce techniques useful for exploring themes related to social justice or the environment. Beginning poets are welcome, as well as advanced. Limit for class: 10
(The cost of this class includes a $25 manuscript fee, to be remitted by IWC directly to the instructor, for assignments that she critiques outside of class time.)
