In the early 19th century, William Wordsworth wrote a sonnet, “The World Is Too Much With Us,” purporting that people swept up by the first Industrial Revolution were so preoccupied by materialism, with “getting and spending,” that they were losing their relationship with nature. As poets in the age of computers and smart phones, is the world too much with us in the sense of communication technology? In what ways can communication technology be a helpful tool for writers? When does it become a hindrance? How do we find balance? This poetry workshop will include discussion, short readings, and writing exercises designed to help participants explore the ways in which technology affects their writing process and sense of connection to others and nature.
