This class will help writers find fictional approaches to real-life events—from their own lives or the lives of others. Topics to be discussed include researching an actual event with a creative eye, selecting the event that is right for you, and finding an effective point of view. The class will also address the legal considerations one should be aware of when writing about real people and real events. Successful books that have used this approach will be referenced in the discussion, including Kurt Vonnegut’s “Slaughterhouse V”; James Ellroy’s “The Black Dahlia,” and Stephen King’s “11-22-63.” The instructor will also discuss the process by which he wrote The Killing of Strangers, which deals with the Kent State shootings of 1970 and “Distance Learning,” which deals with the Oklahoma City Federal Building bombing. Writers of fiction in any form will find something valuable in this session. Memoirists are welcome, too.
