The flash form is a thriving literary genre, and also a great way to improve writing skills as you work toward longer pieces – full-length stories, a novel, or a book-length memoir. You might use flash writing as a daily exercise, like a pianist working to stay nimble, or a painter experimenting with color and light. Or you might write flash pieces intended for publication.
Either way, flash is also a fantastic form for experimentation and artistic growth. Dinty W. Moore, editor of Brevity: A Journal of Concise Nonfiction, will review the elements that make flash sizzle, and offer exercises and prompts to strengthen your short form muscles.
Dinty W. Moore is the director of Ohio University’s BA, MA, and PhD in creative writing programs. He has authored various books of literary nonfiction as well as textbooks and craft guides, most notably Dear Mister Essay Writer Guy, and his memoir, Between Panic and Desire, won the GrubStreet National Book Prize. Moore has been published in Harpers, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, the Philadelphia Inquirer, Utne Reader, Salon, Okey-Panky, the Southern Review, the Georgia Review, and the Los Angeles Review of Books. He is the founder and editor of Brevity and is a frequent speaker and teacher at writers’ conferences.
