From the medieval renderings of Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty to the melancholy musings of Hans Christian Andersen, fairy tales have guided us through some of life’s biggest obstacles. They’ve offered us comfort in our loneliness, hope when we’re feeling blue, and sometimes a good laugh at their absurdity. So what would these tales look like with an update? Can our contemporary world of social media, globalization, and political concerns be reflected in a fairy tale? What would that change look like? In this class, we’ll trace the history of fairy tales in their many re-workings and adaptations, and then challenge ourselves to bring a classic tale into the 21st century! Writers and readers of all levels are welcome!
