We know how important it is to workshop drafts, but sometimes it’s our writing process itself that needs revision. Writing is hard. It’s messy and recursive, and there are no easy shortcuts. But by reflecting on your own process and experimenting with techniques you don’t often use, you can get yourself out of a rut and develop more sustainable and rewarding writing habits.

In this four-week series, we’ll workshop our individual ways of writing and experiment with approaches like free-writing, outlining, mapping, really rough drafting, and radical revision. For each of us, the aim will be to rework our individual writing process so that it better helps us meet our writing goals.

Because this workshop focuses on the writing process, writers working in any genre—fiction, poetry, playwriting, memoir, nonfiction—are welcome. Please bring a draft along if you have a project underway.

Course Instructor:

Michelle Niemann discovered her love for consulting with writers one-on-one about their work in progress while teaching in the Writing Center at the University of Wisconsin, where she was a graduate student. After earning her PhD in English literature in 2014, for two years Michelle served as a postdoc at UCLA, where she co-edited The Routledge Companion to the Environmental Humanities (2017) with Ursula K. Heise and Jon Christensen. Having grown up in Fort Wayne, she moved to Indy in 2016 and now works with scholars and writers as an independent writing consultant and editor. Michelle’s poems have appeared in RHINO, After Hours, and Cannot Exist, and she has been awarded writing residencies at Ragdale, Ucross, and Caldera for creative prose work. Her scholarly articles have been published in Victorian Poetry, the Journal of Modern Literature, and Modernism/modernity.
