When Charles sees “small drops of perspiration on [Emma’s] bare shoulders,” what color is her hair? Auburn like your favorite aunt’s? As readers, our imaginations naturally fill in missing details, usually from personal memories, experiences, and preferences. As writers, we can use the presence or absence of details as a strategic tool to guide the reader’s imagination. Through in-class exercises, we’ll explore the strategic use of details to heighten the effect and usefulness of description in building character, scene, and story. Mendelsund’s book, What We See When We Read, available on amazon.com ($10) will be used in discussions. Feel free to bring a laptop for class work.
