Like me, you may have noticed a new proliferation of “Visual Poetry” popping up in all sorts of places. Many literary journals are now publishing this often colorful and fascinating art form alongside their typical fiction, nonfiction and poetry sections. What is “Visual poetry” and what can we learn from this fun and exciting art form? Visual Poetry combines words and images in bold and interesting ways. In this class, we will explore some of the foundations of Visual Poetry and we will also play in making our own Visual Poems using techniques such as collage and erasure. Materials such as markers, found texts, glue and magazines will be provided, but please bring any of your own materials that you wish to work with, such as old magazines or books, or photocopies of texts that could be cut up. Also feel free to bring your favorite pair of scissors, if you choose; although we will work to provide enough scissors for everyone. This workshop is designed to give you new ways of expressing your creativity and through the prompts, give you a solid start to your own practice of this innovative art form.
