“Show; don’t tell” is the mantra of creative writing classes from the time we’re in grade school, but the persistent problem of abstraction—the tendency to write around, or about, a scene rather than to show it—remains a problem for writers of any age. The literature classes we took in school probably tended to heavily emphasize symbolic thinking, through which an image comes to mean more than one thing in a kind of formulaic relationship. And most careers have jargon that keeps us from really understanding the specific meaning of what we are reading, writing, and saying. This course will combine the few but important benefits that come from symbolic and abstract thought with the strength of the sensory noun, skillful word choice, and specific physical detail. By the end of the course, your writing will be more vivid and emotionally powerful.
